In this issue, our authors discuss the effects of pop culture on the church. We often fail to appreciate the extent to which supposedly “neutral” and “benign” factors mis-shape the identity of the church and of her message. One of the reasons for the predicament in which we find the church these days is that the evangelical movement has, by and large, married the spirit of the age. A time when “whirl”—the fascination with the novel, eccentric, eclectic and “exciting”—is king, our age is dominated by an obsession with mass popular culture.
